***NOW AVAILABLE ON CD!!! METAL MOUNTAINS is HELEN RUSH, formerly of the TOWER RECORDINGS, with help from PG SIX (guitar) and SAMARA LUBELSKI (bass and violin). “There’s a sort of haunted architecture to Metal Mountains, they morph 1960’s electric and psychedelic folk rock, the right VU influence, spatial excursions, and whispery dreams into a unique whole. It is a carefully crafted album that is real and intimate, yet has the air of ease and playfulness about it. It is confident in its frailty, if that makes any sense to you. Did I say it is perfectly sequenced? Y’know, that’s the kind of thing a reviewer needs to mention if he wants to be taken at all seriously.”—Jesper Eklow / November 2010

Dat Rosa Mel Apibus by White Magic

White Magic

Dat Rosa Mel Apibus
Drag City

***WHITE MAGIC is the songwriting and vocal lyricism of MIRA BILLOTTE (QUIX*O*TIC) engaged by the talented likes of ‘’SLEEPY’ DOUG SHAW, JIM WHITE (DIRTY THREE), TIM DEWIT (GANG GANG DANCE), TIM BARNES, SAMARA LUBELSKI, SHAHZAD ISMAILY, JESSE LEE, KAREN LEBLANC, and BRAD TRUAX. White Magic’s debut full length album Dat Rosa Mel Apibus is an elaborate evolution from the the group’s first release. It is a journey which sets forth into an untamed musical landscape, finding the familiar in unusual streams of new sound—a new music. A music that knows the past, but does not repeat it. Torch songs ride into dark ragas and devotional dub with prophetic resonance. Influences of African and tropical guitar rise and reel through the harmony. The album is a movement of great proportion, exploring the emotional and the spiritual to unbounded and sublime depths.

***The Communion Label is pleased to present another special chapter from the ever-changing ensemble known as THE TOWER RECORDINGS. Folk Scene presents the crew (for this recording inclusive of MATT VALENTINE, P.G. SIX, HELEN RUSH, ERIKA ELDER, TIM BARNES, S. FREYER ESQ., STEVE GUBLER, ROBERT HENRY JONES III, SAMARA LUBELSKI, DEAN ROBERTS, ANDRE VIDA, and BARRY WEISBLAT) in a rarified state, a folksiche mood and sound hinted at in previous recordings (especially Siltbreeze's wondrous Furniture Music) but now developed in full blossom. Beauty and inspiration rain down like manna in these sessions, recordings both wonderfully focused and distilled, yet free. Those of us enamored of the English pagan folk rock of decades past (both electric and acoustic) will no dooubt be pleased with this enhanced collection, previous released as a limited vinyl pressing of 300 copies. An extra fourteen tracks are added to this CD version, along with completely new art and information.

***RIVENER's self-titled LP is the follow-up to the Svengali Gaze EP the band put out last fall. All of Rivener's songs are composed on-the-fly—lysergic, shape-shifting explorations of no wave, noise, free-jazz and psych, with some elements rooted loosely in the rock tradition. Since its inception the band has been fortunate enough to book shows with many artists known for lighting up music’s outer fringes: Xylouris White, Magik Markers, Oneida, Millions-Sauter Duo, Samara Lubelski, Marisa Anderson, Spectre Folk, MV & EE, Landing, and many others. Limited to 250 copies and comes with a full digital download.  "New Haven, Connecticut based duo, playing guitar/drum improvisations with a very psychedelic edge...this is a great combo of loose, jazzoid lateral drum figures and a guitar tone recalling Rick Bishop at his most blotter-friendly, although mostly shorn of Eastern modalities. Which is not to infer there aren't some vary dang exotic passages.”—Byron Coley (The Wire)

***BACK IN STOCK!!! America Mystica is a collection of four live recordings, made under varied circumstances, ranging from the quiet and comfortable setting of the WFMU -free form radio recording studio, to the live theater environment at the cube cinema in Bristol England, where the group was recorded in concert performance. the lineup includes Montreal musicians Fluffy Erskine and David Bryant, as well as long time JOMF members T. Greenwood and Brooke Crouser also appearing in these recordings are Jeff Mooridian, Adam Forkner, Honey Owens, Jessie Carrot, Theo Angell, Samara Lubelski, Josh Stevenson, Genevieve Delinger, Alexander Tucker and Andy Cvar, with live sound by Craig Bowen. Galaxies Incredible Sensual Transmission Field Of The...
Communion Label

The Galaxies Incredibly Sensual Transmission Field of the Tower Recordings comprises a full band expedition to an upstate New York church session around the time that songs used for the Folk Scene album were recorded. After reviewing the tapes with fellow tapenaut and TTR member Tim Barnes, Matt Valentine (MV) said The music is some of the finest TTR has ever produced, encompassing all our nodes and distilled toward a universal sound like no other that the band ever touched on. We believe you will agree. These recordings find TTR in their penultimate moment, as a full ensemble breathing alternately spicy and sweet and hazy and then twinkling. There are a lot of reference points, but we'll leave those up to you to discern. You're an adult now. We trust you.  Line-Up: MV / PG Six / Helen Rush / Tim Barnes / Samara Lubelski / S. Hall of Fame's third full-length album finds these NYC indoor miners forging even deeper into their secret cave of gems (financed with new picks'n'shovels on the Siltbreeze tab). Like their previous output on the Amish label, this one's a melange of tribal thump, eastern drone, raga concrète and melodious melancholia. Hall of Fame's unique, not easily identifiable sound has been compared to revered oufits such as Flies Inside the Sun and The Shadow Ring, sometimes even in English. If, like the young scribes from Hayfever magazine, your recollection and your record collection go back further than a time we like to call "the early '90s," it's okay to shout "king me!" and move on. But if you really wanna sit around the ol' checkerboard discussing strategy, then your next stop is a lower east side of the late '60s; Hall of Fame's healthy smattering of influences stretches back to Ludlow Street-era Velvet Underground, Prestige-era Moondog, The Godz and Angus Maclise. Recently the band played a series of shows with The Red Krayola, impressing the hell out of that old Quixotic Dadaist Mayo Thompson and his erstwhile Sancho Panza, David Grubbs. Señor Grubbs was so impressed that he enlisted HoF's Dan Brown to do some drumming for his forthcoming release of covers from various performances from the King Biscuit Flower Hour. Only in New York! o Samara is also a member of Tower Recordings, Metabolismus & Sonora Pine. Dan Brown has done time in Stratotanker & God Is My Co-Pilot. Theo...

Austin-based power trio The Well redefine heavy rock by merging massive riffs with sophisticated melodies. Their progressive sound stems from a nostalgic desire to blend different musical styles as diversified as Joy Division to Blue Cheer. The group blossomed when guitarist/vocalist Ian Graham was fired from his previous band. Determined to redirect his musical focus, Graham hooked up with bassist Lisa Alley and the two began picking out riffs in their east-side garage. Rounding out their sound, they stole drummer Jason Sullivan from Grahams old band in a tale of vengeance and karma. His solid groove and reckless tribal beat gave the three-piece their ideal primal attack. Due to their psychedelic doom edge, The Well reap comparisons to Black Sabbath, Sleep, Electric Wizard and Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats. Samsara is the band's first full length LP, Inspired by early 0s psych and proto-metal, The Well have created a sound that reflects doom, punk and horror all rolled together in a ghostly rock soundtrack. Their full-length debut, amsara', is their strongest collection of songs to date. Produced by Mark Deutrom and released through Riding Easy Records, the masterwork is a stripped down, electric blues fuzzfest and begs to be heard live. After a steady touring schedule that's seen the band share the stage with international acts such as: Kadavar, Orchid, Fu Manchu, High On Fire, NAAM, Orange Goblin, Pentagram and Dead Meadow guarantees The Well are street-tough contenders. "Writing dark, ominous music is how I deal with life," admits Ian....

***Ever since their debut 7” landed on our doorstep unannounced, we have been captivated by the powerfully understated movements of the duo known as UNDEFINED. SAHARA (keys/bass/programming) and OHKUMA (drums) have deep roots in the Japanese dub and reggae scenes (Heavymanners, Soul Dimension) and operate their own experimental dub label. Named for the 3-feel of its colossal groove, “Three” is a locked groove of pure downtempo dubwise, techno in its repetition, hip hop in its tempo and swagger, motorik in its muscularity, meditative in its clarity. Featuring the unmistakable voice of ZamFam RIDER SHAFIQUE, showcased in a moment of profound introspection and vulnerability, “Three" banishes all thoughts of flash-in-the-pan “big tunes” for an incredibly deep and immersive dive. “Three Dub,” a version in the classic sense, strips out the vocal entirely to focus on the rockstone riddim, crafted of one of the most captivatingly beautiful bass tones we’ve ever heard, combined with wicked drum turnarounds, lightning hi-hat work, and extremely subtle & sophisticated dubbing technique. Strictly limited to 600 copies for the world.

Obsidian Visions / Shadowed Lands by Abronia

Abronia

Obsidian Visions / Shadowed Lands
Water Wing

***One can find evidence of a pretty broad array of musical touchstones on Abronia’s Obsidian Visions/Shadowed Lands: Morricone Spaghetti Western soundtracks, spiritual free jazz, Tuareg guitar bands of the Sahara, drone metal, '70s Krautrock, Ethiopiques, Glenn Branca, outlaw country, various tribal music, '60s psychedelia, and maybe even a little '80s goth.  Recorded onto 2” tape by Jason Powers (Grails, Moon Duo etc.) at the venerable Type Foundry Recording Studio, this album is a document of the first five completed compositions by the six piece. Replacing your standard drum set with an early '70s 30" marching drum, which proves to be a proper centerpiece for the guitars, lap steel and saxophone to create mesmerizing and sometimes cacophonous soundscapes. Everyone gathered around the drum and played together, with minimal overdubbing. It’s a snapshot of a band coming right out of the gate with a powerful, realized vision, that in actuality was a long time coming for this group of veteran players.  Abronia is Keelin Mayer (Saxophone/Vocals) Benjamin Blake (Guitar) Andrew Endres (Lap Steel) Amir Amadi (Bass) Eric Crespo (Guitar/Backing Vocals) James Shaver (The Big Drum/Percussion/Melodica)

***CENTIPEDE EEST is a group of five musicians from Pittsburgh, PA who play hybrid rock music born of a collective and sprawling mind. Throughout the course of five years, the band have released two albums, a 12-inch EP, a split 7-inch, and have toured the US. Live shows encompass everything from instant improvisation to chaotic rock riffs, sometimes with visual accompaniment. The band have found inspiration in Lagos, Bangkok, choogle, Dusseldorf, Tokyo, the Sahara, the Sun City and everywhere in between. On their new album, Resonator, Centipede introduces the world to their true sound. Recorded by the band and engineered by multi-instrumentalist JOSHUA TANZER in a relaxed setting, the line between improvisation and prepared sounds has been blurred to a thrilling degree. A call to arms is blown through a hundred individual pipe organs; furious rhythms are built upon different ideas of "the one"; an instant jam is edited and dubbed out, the pulse kept with homemade steel drums; a transcendent finale that has been years in the making. Long live musical democracy! (STREET DATE - 6/01/2010)

Pagan Science by The Well

The Well

Pagan Science
Riding Easy

The impressive crux of Pagan Science, the sophomore album by Austin trio The Well, is that it's a multiplicity of itself. From the band's dual male/female vocals to their transcendently timeless sounds and erudite lyrical themes, Pagan Science is crystalline in its complexity and clarity at the same time. The Well walk an intriguing line between authentic early 70s doom/heavy psych and the more frayed-edge-of-sanity weirdness of their hometown's legendary noise rock scene, whilst also splicing in shades of chamber choir vocals, occult rock and dark folk. Pagan Science was recorded with producer/engineer Chico Jones at Micro Mega Studio in 2016. Jones also previously engineered the band's debut album Samsara with producer Mark Deutrom [Melvins, Sunn0)))] in 2013. Samsara, released late September 2014 was ranked the #1 debut album of 2014 by The Obelisk and widely praised in the press. Likewise, the band's intense - some even say "possessed" - live performances have earned them featured slots at Austin's Levitation Fest in 2015 & 2016, as well as tours with Kadavar, All Them Witches, Black Tusk and more.

Once Upon A Time by Belaboris

Belaboris

Once Upon A Time
Dark Entries

***BELABORIS was born in 1982 as the brainchild of Finnish producer KIMMO MIETTINEN. What Malcolm McLaren had been to The Sex Pistols, Miettinen was to Belaboris. He would put together an all-girl band that looked great in photographs but were backed by professional musicians. The first line-up was VILMA VAINKAINEN on main vocals, SISKO VAINKAINEN and RITA on back-up plus JAKE and MARI who did not sing at all. The backing band behind Belaboris was a local New Wave group called TYHJAT PATTERIT (which translates to Empty Batteries). The main songwriter was ESA IJAS (guitar, synthesizer) along with his bandmates ARI IJAS (bass) and MARTTI JALONEN (drums). Belaboris' debut 12" single "Kuolleet Peilit" was released in November 1982. It was followed by the "Odotus" 7" single in February 1983. The B-side was a cover of the Serge Gainsbourg song "Baby Pop". The band broke up and posthumously released a mini-LP called Olipa Kerran in 1984. WIthin a few months, an all new Belaboris line-up was put together. This version was a trio consisting of SAARA SOISALO (lead vocals), SALLAMAARI MUHONEN (backing vocals) and MINNA SOISALO ("moral support"). They released a 7" single "Rakkauden Jälkeen," an atmospheric electronic version of ‘60s Scandinavian pop hit by Carola. Shortly thereafter this line-up was quietly shelved and no further efforts were made. Once Upon A Time collects songs from all three EP releases and the "Olipa Kerran" mini-LP as well as two unreleased demos never before on vinyl. In Finland the synthetic Futurist/New Romantic...

Death And Consolation by The Well

The Well

Death And Consolation
Riding Easy

Death And Consolation is without a doubt a weighty album title. And, Austin, TX trio The Well is among the heaviest heavy psych bands in existence. So when Riding Easy says that there’s even more darkness and intensity to the band’s third album than previous efforts, take heed. It’s a deep sea diving bell of enveloping heaviness and longing. While The Well continue to walk an intriguing line between authentic early ’70s doom / heavy psych and frayed weirdness of dark folk—especially with their haunting unison male / female vocals—this new album also adds the stark vibe of post-punk acts like Joy Division and early The Cure. There’s also much less jamming, the songs are tight and concise. And, was it mentioned, heavy? The band tuned down a full step to C-standard tuning for this album, which gives the proceedings its monstrous sound. Sonically, the album picks up where the band—guitarist / vocalist Ian Graham, bassist / vocalist Lisa Alley, and drummer Jason Sullivan—left off with their widely heralded 2016 Pagan Science. The band once again recorded with longtime producer / engineer Chico Jones at Estuary Studio in 2018, who has turned the knobs for all three of their albums—Jones engineered the band’s debut album Samsara with producer Mark Deutrom (Melvins, Sunn O)))) in 2013. Samsara, released late September 2014, was ranked the #1 debut album of 2014 by The Obelisk and Pagan Science among the Best of 2016 from the Doom Charts collective. Likewise, the band’s intense—some even say “possessed”—live performances...

Lagos Sessions by Billy Bao

Billy Bao

Lagos Sessions
Night School

“Experimental; conceptual? That’s what these sort of things are usually called, when references are anything but immediate: in the feeling, hearing and seeing, especially by many…. I think the most charitable review of this live electronic exploration will suggest the four sections bordering on insanity. How else? Even when not a few self-styled patriots were booking their flights out of the country, with an election looming to signal the end of a nation, and a band of modern day faith-heads detonating grenades in every other street corner, two dreamers swim against the currents and sneak through the lagoon into the country collecting inputs of derelict art; of garbage can noise; of hooting; honking horns on screeching brakes squelching tar; rackety generator booms? For an imagined program….  “How to find a centre here? The output? The hum-drum of the street’s daily accent compels the sense of the immediate, the terrestrial; and then those primitive, primeval-seeming echoes of the earliest beginnings of the big bang and its wave-sound simultaneously releasing Sun Ra’s reverb sensation of end time! This should not be danceable but these guys are suggesting the possibility of rhythm in the inchoate. Believe me, you can’t miss the Lagos Faaji, Sakara flow, Awurebe, Afrobeat slices; its jazz, highlife / Euro-Afro funk / rock / rap and seedy night echoes, too. But in their otherworldly dimension. No matter the accolades, I will encourage a therapy of some sorts to the creators of this production.” —Sola Olorunyomi
